These are important things. Eventually you learn to use a subset of everything and focus on a specific doctype and grid pattern (everyone seems to invent their own).

A few years after that happens you'll realize the web kinda sucks. In client side app frameworks, things like layout are automatically handled for the app, or even advanced features like "undo". Can you imagine implementing undo in a web app? LOL.

I strongly agree on using JQuery (or similar frameworks) in web development project. Ever since I started using JQuery in my projects, such as <a href="http://veerasundar.com/timelinr/" rel="nofollow">Timelinr</a>, client side scripting has become fun rather than boring thing. :)

Good points. I have one more: use 960 grid system! It actually will make layouting a lot of fun and simplify your HTML/CSS: http://www.960.gs

1.) For CSS look for "reset.css". That will cut down a lot of headaches
2.) A proper doc type helps, the stricter the better for other things.
3.) I love jQuery, has made my life a lot easier.
4.) LCD vs LCD vs CRT. So many headaches there. Purchase a monitor calibrator if it's important to get your colors right.
5.) Pretty URLs is just a first step. So many other things in the HTML that can help with SEO along with many other things.
